During my Virtual Machine Manager presentation at last month’s Southeast Management User Group meeting there was a question raised regarding the ability to move workloads between servers (Quick Migration) and how this would impact the "90-day reassignment" rule in most Microsoft server license agreements.
I wanted to share with you news that was just released today regarding this matter.
In short, Microsoft has updated license terms for 41 server-based products to allow for moving these services between servers in a farm.

In a related post by Diane Prescott, Product Manager, System Center, the company has also updated the licensing for the Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) license, now including VMM 2008.

September 8th will be a pivotal point for Microsoft and core IT infrastructures worldwide. The company will officially launch its new line of virtualization solutions including Hyper-V, System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V). The launch day will be signaled by a full-day, multi-track event held Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, WA. Localized events have not been announced.
Here’s the note from the product group regarding the launch:
Attend the launch event and find out how Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V, Microsoft System Center – including Virtual Machine Manager 2008 and Microsoft Desktop and Application Virtualization allow you to virtualize from the data center to the desktop, and manage with the same tools you’re already using for your physical infrastructure. For more information or to register, visit www.microsoft.com/virtualization . Please use VIRTVIP when prompted for a registration code. Space is limited.
