Chris Wolf, a fellow Microsoft MVP, has written an excellent Redmond Magazine article and supporting script for backing up live Virtual Server VMs using the VS Writer feature of Virtual Server 2007 R2 SP1. Obviously, the preferred method is to use Data Protection Manager 2007 to centrally manage your backups of virtual and physical systems. However, if you’re not licensed for DPM or have already made significant investments in other backup solutions then this scripted routine may be just what you’re looking for in a disaster recovery scenario.
